What Is Affiliate Marketing? A 2026 Guide to 4 Common Models

Understand affiliate marketing, attribution and four commission models, with practical examples of clicks, pending earnings and actual payouts.

This article contains affiliate links. Viet may earn a commission if you register or purchase through these links.

Affiliate marketing lets a publisher earn a commission when a referred customer completes an eligible action. A referral link alone does not create income: the action must be attributed, approved and eligible for payment under the provider’s rules.

Who participates in one referral?

Imagine publishing a workflow that turns an interview into an article draft. A reader follows a relevant product link and considers a purchase. You are the publisher, the software company is the merchant, and the reader is the potential customer. A separate affiliate platform may record the activity and provide reports.

Each participant needs something different. The reader wants a solution, the merchant wants suitable customers, and the publisher needs a credible reason to recommend the product. A useful guide should therefore help someone decide even if they never click. A tracked URL cannot replace an explanation of audience fit.

Four commission models to recognize

ModelPotential qualifying eventQuestion to ask
Sale-basedAn eligible purchaseCan a refund reverse the commission?
Lead-basedA specifically qualified leadIs an email signup enough?
Time-limited recurringEligible payments within a defined periodWhat happens when that period ends?
Customer-lifetimeEligible payments while the customer relationship continuesHow do the terms define lifetime?

These are categories for reading agreements, not a claim that every program offers all four. Lifetime does not mean payment continues after the customer stops buying.

Clicks, conversions and cash are different

A click records a visit. A conversion may still be pending review. Approved earnings may remain below a payout threshold. Keep separate columns for clicks, eligible orders, approved commissions and received payments so you do not confuse activity with available cash.

Consider a hypothetical post with 100 clicks and three orders, one of which is refunded. If each remaining eligible order earns $10, approved commission would be $20 before costs. This is arithmetic, not a normal conversion rate or Viet’s earnings. Attribution rules and cross-device behavior can also produce a different result from your informal estimate of how many people purchased.

Two contextual product examples

A reader with existing recordings may be interested in a Clipto workflow that checks a transcript and corrects names. Someone who wants to speak an idea directly into a draft may prefer a Typeless demonstration showing the input, output and corrections. These are distinct tasks even though both involve speech.

For your own first article, explain one specific decision rather than adding a long directory of unrelated apps. Put a product link after the explanation that makes it relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Do affiliates handle delivery?

In a typical referral arrangement, the merchant handles the product transaction. The publisher remains responsible for their promotional content.

Can I buy through my own link?

Do not assume so. Typeless, for example, excludes self-referrals. Check each program separately.

Does every click earn money?

No. Payment depends on the qualifying event, which may be an approved sale, a qualified lead or another defined action.
